1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

The concept is simple. The rewards are priceless. Read a book to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten.

It may sound hard, but if you read just one book a night you will have read 365 books in a year. That's 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think!

Kids Unearth a Story

This program is designed for children ages 5 to 12 to encourage life-long reading habits. Once you've earned enough points, you'll receive a completion certificate you can print and share!

Teen Unearth a Story

This program is designed for teens or those in grades 6 - 12 to encourage life-long reading habits! Once you've earned enough points you'll receive a completion certificate you can print and share!

How does 1000 Books Before Kindergarten work?

Register Online Here – Parents you can create an account first to easily monitor your children's activity.

Track Your Reading – Log every book you read with your child here!

Keep track of the number of books you read with your child using the booklet you picked up at sign up, or here on Readsquared.

At each milestone, visit the Southgate Veterans Memorial Library to redeem a prize. Every 100 books your child will earn a sticker to commemorate their milestone! They will also get to add their name our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten wall.

At 500 books read your child will get their sticker and a small prize!

At 1,000 books read your child will receive a certificate of completion, a small prize, a book, and an invitation to our yearly 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Celebration! We will also dedicate a picture book in their name to the Southgate Veterans Memorial Library collection!
